![]() Problem trees once removed often leave the tree owner with obligations to remove the stump for the safety of the people and prevent any environmental damages. A stump in your backyard poses risk of tipping and consequent injuries. On the other hand, stump of a diseased tree can infect the soil and spread the infection or disease to other plants. Therefore, removing the stump is the only possible way out. Stump removal is a complicated task as it involves digging and cutting of roots. Some trees have heavy stumps that are difficult to remove. The stump of a small tree, however, is relatively easy to remove. A small tree stump can be removed in three easy steps. Step 1: Loosen the soil around the trunk in a circular motion with the help of a mattock. Make sure you dig slightly away from the trunk to avoid digging on the roots. Use shovel to find the roots of the tree. The roots may be spread far under the soil. Make sure you don’t dig on roots as it may make your job a bit complicated. Step 2: Cut the roots using pruning saw and axe. Use axe to remove large roots and pruning saw to remove small to medium-sized roots. Step 3: The roots of a tree grows as wide under the soil as its branches above the soil. Once you have removed the top layer of the roots dig underneath the soil for lower roots. Remove the lower roots and pull out the stump from the ground. It is important to remove the stump from the ground to prevent tipping and injuries. However, it is also important to fill the hole after removing the stump. The hole if left unfilled may make one fall into it causing serious injuries. I just recently bought a property lot, and to my dismay, there are a lot of tree stumps in it. Since you've stated here that stump removal is a complicated task which consists of digging and cutting roots, I don't think my husband and I will be able to do this on our own. Therefore, I have decided to start looking for a tree service that specializes in stump grinding.
