The Maple tree , like the palm tree, belongs to the Aceraceae family of plants. There are 128 known species of maples but 54 of which are considered endangered because of the danger of habitat loss. There are fossils that evidenced the existence of maples on earth for over 100 million years but some of its species have vanished at the time of the ice age. Maple trees are continuously being cultivated for maple syrup production and the use of its wood in various commercial applications.

• A maple tree must be at least 30 years old for their sap to be tapped. A single 40-year-old maple tree can produce 10 gallons of sap and 30-50 gallons of sap can produce 1 gallon of maple syrup.
• Maple trees are in no way harmed when their sap is tapped because only about 10% of their total tree sap production is actually harvested.
• Some bowling pins, baseball bats and furniture are made out of maple wood.  
• The maple tree’s bark are used medically. The bark’s astringent properties are used in the treatment of sore eyes. When its inner bark is made into tea it is used to help treat cough and diarrhea. Other conditions that are treated with maple tree barks are cramps, dysentery, obstructions of the spleen and liver.
